Why Should You Visit Cancun

Cancun is a beach lover’s paradise, but the joys of visiting go beyond its white sand shores, blue lagoons, and luxe resorts that face the sparkling Caribbean Sea. Mayan ruins in the Yucatan jungle, exquisite eats, and adventure excursions are some of the best reasons to visit Cancun.

Gorgeous Beaches

The Caribbean promises scenic views of aquamarine waters lapping shores lined with fine, white sand. Since Cancun sits on the Caribbean Sea, you’ll find some of the world’s best beaches with gentle waves and areas that receive big swells.

From Playa Delfines to Playa Chac Mool, there are some excellent, kid-friendly beaches in Cancun’s Hotel Zone and beyond.

Ancient Mayan Ruins

Mexico’s rich Mayan history on the Yucatan Peninsula (where Cancun is located) means you’ll be able to visit ancient stone ruins still standing in the dense and humid Yucatan jungle or on the pristine shores of the Caribbean Sea.

Sites like Tulum and Chichen Itza are within 2 hours of Cancun, but you can explore the El Rey ruins right in the Hotel Zone!

Endless Adventures

Want to go snorkeling, swim with sea turtles, ride over to Isla Mujeres, ride ATVs through the jungle, or set out on a deep sea fishing charter? You can do it all right from Cancun.

This beach town is home to hundreds, if not thousands, of excursion operators ready to make your family’s trip as adventurous as you want, from horseback riding to parasailing.

Delicious Food

Mexico is one of the favorite international cuisines for world travelers, and lucky for you, you can taste the best the country has to offer in sunny Cancun!

Try Mexican-spiced seafood, tamales, tacos, and sweet treats at establishments on the beach, local restaurants, or street carts tucked away in Cancun’s Parque las Palapas downtown.

Making the Most of Your Cancun Resort Stay

View of stairs leading to a sandy beach during the best time to visit the best all-inclusive Cancun resorts for families

Cge2010/Shutterstock

There’s no doubt than an all-inclusive family resort is the best way to experience Cancun if you’re bringing the whole crew along, but venturing into all-inclusives can seem almost too good to be true and make you wonder if you’re missing out on important info.

Here’s what you should know to make the most of your all-inclusive resort stay in Cancun.

Getting to the Hotel

Almost all of the best all-inclusive resorts in Cancun for families offer an airport shuttle to make it easy to get to the hotel from the airport (and back to the airport when it’s time to go home). But most charge an additional fee for this service, and some will only offer to refer you to a transfer service.

We can’t speak highly enough about the 5-star service Van Travel by Cancun Transfers provides. They always show up on time, the cars are spotless, and they can accommodate last-minute adjustments and appointments with ease and grace.

Find out what your resort’s policy is regarding airport transportation so you’ll know what to plan on and if you need to pre-book transportation. We like choosing hotels that are located close to the airport (no more than 20 minutes away) for the easiest travel and to get to the resort faster.

Crime and Safety

You may hear about parts of Mexico seeing spikes in crime rates, but Cancun is generally a very safe area for tourists and simply require you to take your normal travel precautions. In the Hotel Zone, petty theft and similar crimes may be more common as people tend to be lax about personal item security when enjoying the beaches, bars, and attractions.

Don’t let your vigilance slip just because you’re on vacation! Keep an eye on your personal items at all times, leave valuables at home, don’t drink too much, and make sure you stick with your entire travel crew when you’re out and about. For all-inclusive resorts, you’ll probably find that leaving the secure resort grounds isn’t even necessary with so much to eat, do, and see!

General All-Inclusive Tips

All-inclusive includes a lot, but it doesn’t usually include everything, especially if you’re opting for a lower-priced room. Onsite spa services, specialty restaurants, top-shelf drinks, classes, water sport equipment rentals, and off-site tours and excursions may have an additional cost.

It’s important to know exactly what “all-inclusive” means at your chosen resort so there are no surprises. You might find out that your resort offers resort credit included with the cost of your stay (we’ve seen some as high as $850!) that can cover any extras that aren’t free.

Pay attention to your resort’s location before you book, too. Are you close to the heart of Cancun near downtown, or will you be further out and need to rent a car, take public transportation, or call a car service to explore beyond your resort?

The best location will depend on how lively you want your stay to be — for peace and quiet, head to the southern end of the 7-shaped Hotel Zone, and to be near the action, stay near the point of the “7.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Damsea/Shutterstock

Still have a few questions about picking out the best all-inclusive resorts to stay in Cancun when you’re bringing your family? We’ve got answers for you below. Here are the most common questions travelers have about booking an all-inclusive trip!

Is Cancun family-friendly for families?

Absolutely! Cancun is family-friendly, even if you’re bringing small children along. If you’re bringing kids or want a quiet experience, you might feel more comfortable staying at the southern end of the Hotel Zone, further from the downtown area that tends to draw a younger crowd eager to party.

How many days in Cancun is enough?

Generally, 4-7 days in Cancun is enough to give yourself a chance to fully enjoy the amenities and facilities of your all-inclusive resort, explore nearby beaches and attractions, and get plenty of time to relax, go on adventures, and sample an array of delicious Mexican flavors.

Can kids go to an all-inclusive?

Kids can go to an all-inclusive resort in Cancun as long as the resort isn’t designated as Adults Only. Some all-inclusives offer both a family section and an adults-only section. If a resort advertises a kid’s pool, Kid’s Club, water park, or similar amenities, it’s a family-friendly resort.

Which part of the Hotel Zone is best in Cancun?

The northern end of the 7-shaped Hotel Zone (the short part of the 7) is the best for calm-water beaches and close proximity to downtown Cancun, bars, restaurants, and attractions. Further south (the long part of the 7), things are quieter, but waves are bigger. There are still plenty of restaurants and excursion operators here.

Where are places in Cancun to stay that are not sketchy?

The entire Hotel Zone is a safe place to stay that isn’t sketchy (though you may find people imbibing a bit carelessly near the hub of the Hotel Zone around Punta Cancun). The Hotel Zone has a strong police presence, ample resort and hotel security, and safe conditions to relax and enjoy Cancun’s beaches and attractions.

Enjoy the Best All-Inclusive Resorts in Cancun for Families
