Making the Most of Your Cancun Resort Stay

Woman seeing the ruins in Tulum, one of the things to do while staying at the best all-inclusive resorts in Cancun

Simon Dannhauer/Shutterstock

Not sure you’re doing this all-inclusive thing right? We’ve got some helpful tips and advice for you that’ll help you make the most of your all-inclusive resort stay in beautiful Cancun.

Getting to the Resort

It takes 10-40 minutes to get from the airport to most Cancun resorts, and you’ll need transportation to get there. Some all-inclusive resorts offer free airport shuttles and transport, but not all will include this perk at no cost.

Check with your resort to find out if you need to book private transportation ahead of time or schedule a pickup from the resort’s shuttle. There’s an ADO Bus Station at the airport if you’d rather take the bus into Cancun, and it’s always an affordable option if your resort is near a bus stop.

Crime and Safety

No place on Earth is totally free from crime and safety risks, so staying aware and alert while you’re vacationing in Cancun is essential. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your trip and relax while you’re here! Just keep an eye on your belongings and don’t display valuables in public.

In general, the Hotel Zone in Cancun is one of the safest places to be with a great police presence, resort and hotel security, and fenced properties where only paying guests are allowed to enter.

If you decide to venture beyond your resort, keep your wallet and phone in front pockets or inner pockets of backpacks/purses to avoid pickpocketing. Don’t wear expensive jewelry or watches, drink responsibly, and try not to travel alone at night.

All-Inclusive Resort Tips

All-inclusives work differently from basic hotels and resorts. While your meals, snacks, drinks, entertainment, and activities are generally included with the cost of your stay, some things aren’t.

Drinks are generally part of the all-inclusive package, including alcoholic drinks, sodas, tea, lemonade, and water. But top-shelf or premium drinks may cost extra — double check with your resort to be sure before you start ordering.

It’s a good idea to be aware of the perks that cost extra, like day trips, water sports equipment rentals, spa services, and specialty restaurants. Carefully read the fine print so you’ll know what you’re getting with your room rate and what you’ll need to pay more for.

Start your day early at an all-inclusive resort in Cancun. Loungers by the pool and beach with umbrellas are limited and may be claimed early in the morning by eager guests. Hit the breakfast buffet first thing, then stake your claim down at the pool or beach!

Frequently Asked Questions

A white ford econoline taxi going to the best all-inclusive resorts in Cancun

Art Konovalov/Shutterstock

Can’t wait to stay at one of Cancun’s best all-inclusive resorts? It’s easy to see why! Take a look at some of the most frequently asked questions from travelers to get a sense of what you can expect when you stay at one of these awesome accommodations.

Which part of Cancun is best to stay in?

The southern end of the Hotel Zone is the best part of Cancun to stay in if you want a more peaceful, romantic visit and don’t mind bigger waves down at the beach. Choose the northern end in the heart of Cancun’s Hotel Zone for a more lively, party-centric experience with calmer waters and tons of shopping, neighboring resorts, and restaurants.

Where do celebrities stay in Cancun?

Celebrities stay in Cancun on a regular basis in upscale resorts and vacation homes. Ashanti, Flo Rida, and Floyd Mayweather have stayed at Garza Blanca Resort & Spa, Usher has been spotted at The Grand Moon Palace, and Shakira, Julia Roberts, and George W. Bush have stayed at the swanky LeBlanc Spa Resort in Cancun.

Which is better, Cancun or Riviera Maya?

Cancun is better if you’re looking for lots of beach time, amenity-focused resorts, and the chance to mingle with other travelers on the beaches, at the bars, and at restaurants. Riviera Maya is better if you want a laid-back trip with natural beauty that still offers plenty of luxury and affordable accommodations options.

How many days in Cancun is enough?

Usually, a trip lasting 4-7 days in Cancun is enough to give yourself time to enjoy your resort’s facilities and amenities, the beaches, and local cuisine. If you plan on doing a little more exploring with day trips and adventure excursions, plan on spending 5-10 days in Cancun.

What is the best month to visit Cancun?

The best month to visit Cancun is typically January or February, when the weather is warm, dry, and doing outdoor activities is much more pleasant. But these months can be crowded, so you might enjoy visiting in May -- higher chances of rain, but fewer tourists and great prices on rooms.
