The best time to visit Cleveland is the summer, when warm temperatures make the city come to life and there are plenty of events going on around town.

Summertime in Cleveland brings welcome relief after a long, cold winter. Average high temperatures in July are around 84 degrees Fahrenheit according to the National Weather Service. The days are warm, but usually not so hot that it feels unpleasant to walk around.

The warm weather is ideal for exploring the city’s many parks and outdoor attractions. The Holden Forests & Gardens are a favorite year-round destination for locals and visitors alike, but are even more beautiful when you have reliably sunny, warm weather to enjoy them.

Summer is also the perfect time to visit if you’re hoping to combine a city break with some time exploring the Great Lakes. Cleveland is located right on Lake Erie, and there are opportunities to get on the water without even needing to leave the city. The official tourist board lists summertime events around the lake, such as canoe rentals, picnics, and organized beach parties.

In fact, summer is one big party in all of Cleveland, not just on the shores of Lake Erie. People are so sick of being confined in their homes in the winter that all of the city’s open spaces are full of locals picnicking and having fun. Listen to some street musicians, join a street party, or just take in the scene.

Summer is also peak festival season in the city, with more organized events filling up the social calendar. Popular events include:

Summer is also a great time to visit for sports fans. Baseball season is in full swing, and fans can catch an MLB game played by hometown heroes the Cleveland Guardians.

The only drawback is that summer is definitely the most popular time to visit Cleveland, so expect lines to be longer and prices to be higher. However, this town is not really a top tourist destination, so outside of major attractions such as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, you probably won’t notice the crowds.

The cheapest time to visit Cleveland is in the mid to late fall (from October to November). Cleveland is a budget-friendly destination all year round, but prices tend to rise in the summer. That is when there is the most demand from visitors, so hotel prices tend to rise accordingly.

By September, visitor numbers start to go down and hotel prices drop accordingly. By October and November, you can book hotels for up to 30% lower than what you would pay in October during peak season.

If you are flying into Cleveland, visiting in late autumn is one of the best times to visit for deals. November is one of the best times of the year to score affordable flights (as long as you avoid Thanksgiving).

The great thing about visiting Cleveland in the fall is that you still can catch good weather. In October, average temperatures are around 55 degrees Fahrenheit, reaching highs of 63 degrees Fahrenheit. This is good weather for walking around outside and taking in the fall foliage and warming up occasionally indoors.

Fall is also a good time to visit Cleveland for cultural events. Many music lovers visit the town for its long history of underground rock music, and many of its venues start up again in September. Fall also has many popular festivals, such as Cleveland Beer Week in October.

Least Busy Time to Visit Cleveland

The least busy time to visit Cleveland is in the spring, when there tend to be fewer visitors. In the spring months, March and April, Cleveland doesn’t get as many visitors as in the summer. By May, visitor numbers tend to perk up, but they don’t reach peak levels yet.

One of the reasons for lower visitor numbers is the unpredictable spring weather. Winter is slow to release its grip on Cleveland, and average temperatures well into April are only about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Snow storms can happen well into April, followed quickly by days with warm sunshine.

As long as you pack weather-appropriate clothing and pay close attention to the forecast, you can still make the most of a spring trip to Cleveland. The Holden Forests & Gardens come alive in the spring and update their weekly It’s Poppin’ blog with updates about what is blooming and what is set to bloom soon.

Take advantage of the thinner crowds to visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This spectacular temple to modern rock music is the city’s most famous tourist attraction, which means that it gets crowded in the summer. Winter and spring may have the shortest hours, but you will be able to admire the different video recordings and artifacts without jostling for room.

Worst Time to Visit Cleveland

The worst time to visit Cleveland is during the winter, primarily because of its weather. Don’t underestimate the ferocity of Midwestern winters.

Winter is technically the most affordable and least busy time to visit Cleveland; however, we don’t recommend visiting during this time. The bitterly cold weather will cancel out any positive feelings that you may have about the extra dollars in your bank account.

Average daily temperatures in January in Cleveland are about 29 degrees Fahrenheit but can get below 20 degrees at night. The wind from Lake Erie makes it feel even chillier, which makes it annoying to visit attractions that are close to the shore, such as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. When the weather is this cold, spending any amount of time walking around outdoors is unpleasant.

Besides the cold, you also have to worry about the snow. In the winter months (December to March), Cleveland receives an average of 14.1 inches of snow per month. Heavy snow and storms make walking around the city a drag, but also make it hard to get there. Storms ground flights and snag up traffic on interstate highways.

If you wind up in Cleveland during the winter, make sure that you wear warm clothing and good boots. There are plenty of indoor attractions where you can warm up, and they’ll probably be free of crowds except for locals and the occasional school group.

Christmas time in Cleveland is also special because the city marked out Christmas for generations of Americans. The movie A Christmas Story takes place here, and fans can go visit the house from the movie, now turned into a quirky gift shop and museum.
