SUMMARY: THE BASICS

Price: £1,395 without accommodation (approx. US$1,800) for 6 weeks or longer, regardless of length of time
£3,250 with accommodation (approx. US$4,225) for 6 weeks
£450 (US$585) for each additional week with accommodation.

Duration: From 6 weeks to 12 weeks or longer.

Requirements: Different firms will have different requirements, but you will need to either be studying or have some experience.

Criminology

Our Criminology internships are often hosted by academic institutes, and a Criminology intern may complete tasks including:

  • Researching and writing articles. ​Clinical forensic and theoretical criminology research. Analysis of data. Working on theoretical projects around restorative justice, evolutionary criminology, offender rehabilitation, and neuroethics in the forensic area. Liaising with Dept of Corrections personnel (visiting a Correctional facilities and meet with psychologists working with offenders).

Counselling

Counselling internships are possible in many different fields and with different clientele. Some of the tasks may include:​

  • Listening to clients and their problems and concerns.
  • Providing a safe, confidential and encouraging environment.
  • Showing empathy, patience and respect.
  • Empowering clients to make their own decisions.
  • Showing people a structured and focused way of addressing problems.
  • Helping people with: substance abuse, health records of the process of service users.

Psychology

Tasks you might be asked to do in a psychology internship include:

  • Participating in therapeutic group work.
  • 1-to-1 work.
  • Participating and supporting young people to engage in physical activities for example hiking, swimming, ice skating.
  • Providing direct support and guidance to (young) people to develop general safe living skills for example cooking health meals.
  • Working with people on a returning home/return to school/re- integration into the community.
  • Research.
  • Conducting thorough assessment of clients, ncluding: interviews, collateral contacts, file reviews, consideration of psycho-social history, mental status examination, and risk to self/others.
  • Developing sound psychological formulations, based on thorough assessment, including, but not limited to, DSM-IV Multiaxial diagnoses, response to referral questions, treatment plan and recommendations.
  • Analysing client behaviours identified as problematic to develop programmes to change specific behaviours.

Social Work

Doing a social work internship means working with people from different age groups, different backgrounds and with different needs. This makes the work very interesting, and tasks may include:

  • Responding to crisis and support needs of clients and providing support or referrals where appropriate.
  • Providing advocacy on behalf of clients and/or their support networks (friends and family).
  • Documentation for all clients that you work with.
  • Working with community groups to win support for improved provision and acting as an advocate for young people’s interests, particularly in regards to bullying.
  • Participating in and supporting young people with physical activities, for example, hiking, swimming, ice skating.
  • Providing direct support and guidance to (young) people to develop general safe living skills, for example, cooking healthy meals.
  • Working with people on returning home/returning to school/re- integration into the community​.

Organisational Psychology

A psychology internship in a company might include such tasks as:

  • Developing online psychometric tools and maintaining their in-site platform.
  • Coordination and delivery of psychometric testing.
  • 360 feedback surveys.
  • Marketing activities.
  • Qualitative Analysis.
  • Research projects.
  • Organizing client meetings/events.

ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS - SYDNEY AND MELBOURNE:

When arranging your Internship, we will also liaise with you regarding whether or not you'd like to use our existing accommodation or arrange your own. The choice is yours.

SYDNEY ACCOMMODATION:
Our Sydney accommodation is located around 10km from the CBD, in a foodie suburb with lots of restaurants and cafes. The area has a community feel, and there are bus stops and a train station nearby so you can easily reach the CBD.

Your room comes fully furnished with:

  • A bed + wardrobe and desk + chair
  • A kitchenette with a microwave and a fridge
  • Flat-screen TV
  • Free WiFi

In our accommodation, you'll have all the facilities you need:

  • Including a 24/7 onsite management team
  • The latest in building security
  • Communal living areas, including dining area and outdoor BBQ
  • Access to a gym and outdoor pool
  • Shared access to bathroom facilities which are located outside your bedroom
  • Laundry facilities and big shared kitchen.

MELBOURNE ACCOMMODATION:
Our Melbourne accommodation is located in the city centre where plenty shops, restaurants and bars can be found. There is a tram station in front of the accommodation and the train station is just 5 minutes away.

Your room will be furnished with:

  • A comfortable bed + wardrobe
  • A desk and chair
  • Heat/air conditioning
  • LCD TV

The apartment has:

  • ​A kitchenette with cook top
  • A bar fridge, kettle, toaster and microwave
  • Bathroom facilities
  • Weekly housekeeping
  • Free Wifi

You can use the shared facilities in the building such as the swimming pool and the gym.

FOOD:
Food is not provided in this programme, but your accommodation will have cooking facilities.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BOOK YOUR PLACEMENT?
Once you have applied for a placement, we'll contact you and send you our Welcome Pack. You'll also receive Log-on details and password for our Volunteer Extranet where you'll have access to all the documentation and information which we've put together to facilitate preparations for your adventure! Your Project Co-ordinator for your country will liaise with you throughout the arrangements process, as well as while you're on your placement and on your return home.

The documents you'll have access to also include a Country Factfile, Safety Guide and any manuals that may assist you on your particular programme (e.g. Teaching Guide, Sports Manuals, Enrichment Suggestions for Animal Care, etc.). We do all we can to make your stay one that you'll never forget. This is a truly awesome, elegant and beautiful country.

SUMMARY OF APPROXIMATE EXTRA COSTS RELATING TO THE INTERNSHIP:

Food: We suggest around $60 per week for food.

Transportation: around $25 per week for travel within the main Wellington area.
