SUMMARY: THE BASICS

Price: £1,395 without accommodation (approx. US$1,800) for 6 weeks or longer, regardless of length of time
£3,250 with accommodation (approx. US$4,225) for 6 weeks
£450 (US$585) for each additional week with accommodation.

Duration: From 6 weeks to 12 weeks or longer.

Requirements: Different firms will have different requirements, but you will need to either be studying or have some experience.

Architecture

An architecture internship can include such tasks as:

  • Examining the feasibility of urban developments and the social, economic and environmental impact of these developments.
  • Working in projects that investigate a number of commercially nominated sustainable projects, under design, commercial and environmental perspectives.
  • Ensuring that the environmental impact of the project is managed.
  • Producing detailed workings, drawings and specifications.

Construction Management

There are various tasks that are involved in the construction management industry. Among them, we can find some of the following:

  • Ensuring sub-contractor documentation is up to date.
  • ​Ordering and maintaining office facilities.
  • Updating contractor databases.
  • Preparing site dilapidation reports.
  • Reviewing/assessing sub-contractor quotations.
  • Reconciling sub-contractor invoices.
  • Assisting in letting - Purchase Orders (CM review).
  • ​Preparing monthly project reports.
  • Managing project budgets.

Landscape Design

The role will be quite diverse and might include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Bush regeneration activities, including mulching, weeding, planting of native species and general garden maintenance duties.
  • Triangulation from existing site features such as buildings, fences, trees, etc.
  • Planting plans, paving, fencing, and lawn construction.
  • Identification of landscape features.
  • Concept Design.
  • Design presentation to give the client a clear picture of the design outcomes.

Quantity Surveying

Some of the intern's responsibilities may be:

  • To plan, programme and organise company resources (people and plant) to ensure maximum utilisation and best returns.
  • To meet company objectives for quality service to all customers.
  • To ensure all crews and contracts are carried out in a safe manner.
  • To assist current QS’s with monitoring labour performance.
  • To ensure all invoicing, contract claims, reporting and work in progress assessments are done accurately and by the required dates.

Urban Planning

This internship provides the next step for a highly motivated young planner looking to make the next step in their career. Some of the duties in an urban planning internship may be to:

  • Provide professional administration support to management and town planning, environment and building staff.
  • Co-ordinate incoming and outgoing correspondence in accordance with the Quality Assurance (QA) Policy.
  • Co-ordinate the development application process including: registering files and monitoring actions, deadlines and progress with regard to the project.
  • Liaising with other contractors such as: surveyors, architects, building companies, and engineers.
  • Answer general client enquires.
  • Communicate with clients regarding their application status regularly.

ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS - SYDNEY AND MELBOURNE:

When arranging your Internship, we will also liaise with you regarding whether or not you'd like to use our existing accommodation or arrange your own. The choice is yours.

SYDNEY ACCOMMODATION:
Our Sydney accommodation is located around 10km from the CBD, in a foodie suburb with lots of restaurants and cafes. The area has a community feel, and there are bus stops and a train station nearby so you can easily reach the CBD.

Your room comes fully furnished with:

  • A bed + wardrobe and desk + chair
  • A kitchenette with a microwave and a fridge
  • Flat-screen TV
  • Free WiFi

In our accommodation, you'll have all the facilities you need:

  • Including a 24/7 onsite management team
  • The latest in building security
  • Communal living areas, including dining area and outdoor BBQ
  • Access to a gym and outdoor pool
  • Shared access to bathroom facilities which are located outside your bedroom
  • Laundry facilities and big shared kitchen.

MELBOURNE ACCOMMODATION:
Our Melbourne accommodation is located in the city centre where plenty shops, restaurants and bars can be found. There is a tram station in front of the accommodation and the train station is just 5 minutes away.

Your room will be furnished with:

  • A comfortable bed + wardrobe
  • A desk and chair
  • Heat/air conditioning
  • LCD TV

The apartment has:

  • ​A kitchenette with cook top
  • A bar fridge, kettle, toaster and microwave
  • Bathroom facilities
  • Weekly housekeeping
  • Free Wifi

You can use the shared facilities in the building such as the swimming pool and the gym.

FOOD:
Food is not provided in this programme, but your accommodation will have cooking facilities.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BOOK YOUR PLACEMENT?
Once you have applied for a placement, we'll contact you and send you our Welcome Pack. You'll also receive Log-on details and password for our Volunteer Extranet where you'll have access to all the documentation and information which we've put together to facilitate preparations for your adventure! Your Project Co-ordinator for your country will liaise with you throughout the arrangements process, as well as while you're on your placement and on your return home.

The documents you'll have access to also include a Country Factfile, Safety Guide and any manuals that may assist you on your particular programme (e.g. Teaching Guide, Sports Manuals, Enrichment Suggestions for Animal Care, etc.). We do all we can to make your stay one that you'll never forget. This is a truly awesome, elegant and beautiful country.

SUMMARY OF APPROXIMATE EXTRA COSTS RELATING TO THE INTERNSHIP:

Food: We suggest around $60 per week for food.

Transportation: around $25 per week for travel within the main Wellington area.
