WORK CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION

You'll work in a private school that caters for autistic children. The School is based on the outskirts of the renowned temple town of Madurai and was founded in 2010. Their vision is “to facilitate a barrier free environment; to empower families of persons with autism, and to act as a catalyst for change that will enable persons with autism to live as fully participating members of the community”.

It is difficult to be specific about the day-to-day work you will do, but, in general, you’ll be assisting the Special Educator in providing prompts to do their regular scheduled activities. You may help out in the following areas:

  • Occupational Therapy
  • Table top
  • Edu-sports/Art & craft/ Story/ Drama
  • Speech therapy
  • Music and movements
  • Gardening

The working week will be spread out over 5 days from Monday to Friday. The school is open from 9am-4pm.

Around 54 children attend the school and they are between 3-18 years of age. The Children are grouped according to their functional abilities and IQ levels with small groups; 1 special educator to 4 children with a assistant to facilitate intensive teacher student interaction to aid the learning process.

The areas the school works in are:

  • TEACCH: methodology is implemented, which is Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication Handicapped Children. It is one of the globally recognized methods employed to teach children with ASD.
  • Applied Behavioural Analysis: the process of systematically applying interventions based upon the principles of learning theory to improve socially significant behaviours to a meaningful degree, and to demonstrate that the interventions employed are responsible for the improvement in behaviour.
  • Use of Visual Aids
  • Assessment & Diagnosis
  • Individual Therapy
  • Speech Language & Communication Therapy
  • Pre-Vocational and Vocational skills
  • Occupational Therapy & Sensory Integration:
    • Art & Craft skills
    • Group Therapy
    • Early Intervention
    • Horticulture Therapy
    • Drama and Music
    • Drawing and Painting
    • Activities of daily living
    • Inclusive Education
    • Aquarium Therapy
    • Water Therapy.

To have an effective “School Based Autism Programme" the school has identified seven important steps which researchers and practitioners suggest are necessary to provide effectual support for the students under the autism spectrum disorders:

  • Individual assessment
  • Functional curriculum
  • Research-based teaching
  • Low student ratios
  • Family involvement
  • Data tracking
  • Training and supervision
  • Activities of daily living
  • Innovative therapies

The School's Aims and Objectives:

  • To provide quality intervention
  • To make the children as independent as possible in their daily living activities.
  • To enable each child to achieve his/her maximum academic potential
  • To develop effective communication skills in them and to empower them to interact meaningfully with others.
  • To adopt a holistic approach while working with children with autism.
  • To provide counselling to parents with ASD
  • To create awareness about autism at every level in society
  • To catch them young (2+ yrs).

LOCATION | SIGHTSEEING:

MADURAI:
Many of our projects are based in the bustling city of Madurai in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Madurai is known by many names; ‘Jasmine city’ for the famous jasmine flowers that are cultivated here, ‘the city of Nectar’, Legend tells of a river of nectar that flowed after blessing from Lord Shiva, and the ‘Temple City’.

Madurai really does have a temple or shrine on practically every street but it is most famed for the Sri Meenakshi Sundeswarar Temple. Pilgrims and tourists alike flock to visit the temple and approximately 10,000 visit every day! The temple is named after goddess Meenakshi. It was built in the 17th century and is an enormous structure with 5 outer towers crammed full of idols and animals. The inner courtyard contains another 7 towers, again all highly adorned. It will take your breath away.

Madurai is located on Vaigai River and was the capital of Pandyan rulers till the 14th century. It is full of cultural diversity and life revolves around the awe inspiring Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple, awash with pilgrims, market stalls and tourist shops.

Children will stop you on the streets to chat to you and shake your hand and even ask for your autograph! You will be in demand everywhere you go and you’ll feel like a celebrity, such is the warmth of the Indian people. If you’re after an overwhelming experience, then Madurai is a certainty for this!

KERALA:
KERALA has been named ""Gods own Country" by the locals for its stunning scenery, wildlife, beautiful beaches, picture postcard towns and the breaktaking backwaters. It is also the home of Ayurveda medicine, an ancient system using essential oils and vigorous massage to aid medical complaints or just for pampering - a one hour massage is an unforgettably relaxing experience.

Kerala also has one of the best wildlife parks in the country; Periyar. A huge array of activities are on offer, jungle trekking and jeep safari’s which take you off the beaten track in the hope of spotting an elusive tiger although you are more likely to see elephants, boar, monkeys and many species of birds. You can also take an elephant ride, boat ride, visit spice and tea plantations, watch martial arts – it’s an action packed weekend and only 4 hours from Madurai!

REVIEWS AND FEEDBACK:

SUE MACLEOD
Irish
Care for Children with Physical and Mental Disabilities in Madurai

On my arrival I was met by the host family and taken to their home. Anitha Lakshman [Travellers' India Manager and also Sue's Host Family] was wonderful, helpful and gave me advice about the town, area and culture I would be living in. Her home is beautiful and within easy reach of everything. Anitha gave me an induction to the area and backed this up with written material ... The transport to and from the school was fantastic and reliable. Though I did have extra travel costs if I was asked by the School to go to the College during the day.

On arrival I emerged myself immediately in Indian culture and found this to be most rewarding, as I learned from this without looking through western eyes.

During my time in Madurai I took the opportunity to go by public transport to Kerala. Anitha was fantastic and helped arrange accommodation for me. This part of India was extremely different to the city of Madurai and I would recommend all your volunteers to visit. My hosts helped me organise a Jeep Safari, dance shows, martial arts shows, visits to spice gardens and tea plantations. Highlight was an authentic Ayurvedic Medicine treatment.

Madurai is a beautiful city and I immersed myself in the Hindu Culture. I quickly independently found my way around and even managed to get the right prices on the Auto’s without being ripped off!! The Meenakshi Temple and the Taylors market saw me as a regular visitor. I was lucky to be there for a 200 float parade through the City dedicated to Lord Shiva. In addition I took a Rickshaw Tour of the City and went nightly to Yoga classes, these were excellent but I felt overcharged by your company for these.

Overall, from my placement I go away with the memory of children’s smiling faces and a desire from the school and college staff to learn more hands on teaching stratagies to help with their daily work with Special Needs children.

PATRICIA GLEESON

Care for Children with Physical and Mental Disabilities in Madurai

Busy, noisy, colourful, smelly in places, all these things make Madurai an amazing place to be. The people have been so friendly and helpful in all areas. I have been surprised by the huge numbers of people out and about at all times of day, busy, busy, busy.

I am gaining an insight into how children with autism, learning difficulties and physical disabilities are educated and cared for in a different country.

The best things about my placement by far are the smiles, handshakes and hugs I am met with every day. The staff and parents have all been so welcoming and made me feel at ease in a strange country and different environment. It has been heart warming to see how the children help each other and the older ones taking charge of the younger ones.

I certainly would recommend this placement to anyone else. It is such a rewarding placement. The children are so responsive to new people and gives them confidence with new social situations. This placement would suit just about anyone with a heart.

Experience living with a host family: a truly wonderful one! I have felt at ease with the family and enjoyed typical Indian cuisine including delicious homemade breads and cakes. Anitha and her family are on hands to answer questions and help you to get the most from your Madurai experience. Having Anitha at the other end of the phone helped me to feel confident going out and about in Madurai as I am travelling alone.

RESPONSIBLE & ETHICAL TRAVEL:

Sustainable and ongoing development of local communities is always the primary aim of our volunteer projects and this project is no different. You'll take up where others before you left off and thus helping to continue making this project sustainable.

We are passionate about mutually beneficial interaction with the local community. The team members are locals and very community-minded. We work closely with the local community to achieve maximum benefits and emphasis is always placed on doing what is best for the local environment.

To this end, information on how to leave minimal negative impact on the environment is given to you prior to your departure as part of your documentation from Travellers Worldwide. This is also highlighted in your induction on arrival.

SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY:

We have local staff in each destination where we have Programmes and where we work with local partners, again the staff employed are locals. We have long-standing relationships with local people, making this a sustainable, on-going project. Your work here contributes to, and helps to continue, the long chain of worthwhile achievements in this community. You'll also be directly influencing the local economy and supporting international tourism, an important part of the country's general economy. So, by living in the local area, you're bringing in income through tourism and education through cultural exchange!

The accommodation on this project is locally owned and all the staff are from the neighbourhood. Where food is provided, produce is purchased in nearby shops, helping provide authentic local cuisine. Where you've chosen host family accommodation (where available), families are selected based on their desire to provide real cultural exchange and at the same time a warm family environment.

Social Responsibility: The information we provide prepares you for your placement and how to deal with the local people. It also briefs you on the Do’s and Don’ts and makes you aware of the possible impact of your behaviour. However, you are also expected to do research on the country you're going to and their customs and culture. The research you do will help you to gt the most out of this exciting travel and experience opportunity.

Cultural sensitivity: Volunteers receive an induction and orientation on arrival which covers things like being sensitive to the culture you’re in, everyday processes which will be different to what you’re accustomed to, how to have the maximum beneficial imprint and the minimum negative impact.

We stress the importance of responsible tourism, cultural differences and acceptable/unacceptable conduct. Where appropriate, volunteers are briefed on local customs, particularly those that are different to the volunteer’s accepted norm.

Economic Responsibility: By living in the volunteer house provided by the project you’ll, again, be providing much needed income and employment to the local population. The house is simple and built from natural materials and you are actively encouraged to recycle, be efficient with energy and water usage and preserve the natural surroundings. All food is provided and sourced locally. Your transport to and from the project will usually be either on a bicycle or walking again contributing to green efforts.

For 25 years our volunteers have lived in local communities around the world, spent their money with local traders and brought funding to the projects they work with. Travellers employs local staff and works with local support staff. This helps to fund the project directly and through bringing money into the local community.

In general, the organisations we work with around the world often struggle to financially support and maintain the work they do, so every penny raised makes a real difference.

Our aim is to create always a Win-Win-Win situation in terms of the benefits for, (a) the local communities and institutions you work in, (b) our Volunteers, i.e. you, and (c) for Travellers. We do not embark on any project that is not beneficial to all three of these stakeholders.

The impact of pollution: Where transport to and from the project is required, it is left up to you to choose. Public transport is always recommended by us and all nearby public transport routes are shown to all new arrivals. If taxis are required, you'll be encouraged to share with other volunteers in order to lessen the impact of pollution wherever possible.

Having regard for the local community by being consciously aware of your impact is encouraged in all our documentation for all our projects in all our destination countries. This is because we feel very strongly that many countries are subject to, for example, water shortages, high cost of energy and high impact of energy usage, the negative impact of litter and general pollution. Thus we encourage you to be aware of these possible impacts so that they contribute positively and not negatively to the community in this respect

POSITIVE EFFECTS THAT TRAVELLERS HAS ON THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT:

We provide you with many tips on how to be a responsible traveller regarding the environmental impact you have.

We want you to be immersed in the culture, by living and working with local people. We work with local communities, local charities, local government bodies and local schools. We also often partner with local organisations whom we have vetted to ensure that they are committed to the projects they run, that they have the same responsible attitude to the local community that we do, that they are eco-friendly and have ethical policies.

In our projects and in our headquarters offices, we take an environmentally responsible attitude towards recycling and reusing of waste products. We encourage all participants to offset their flight emissions via a carbon offset scheme. Our volunteers are given pre-departure Information that encourages them to minimise waste and reduce their use of water and electricity, in other words, to live sensitively in the environment that they’re working in.

Travellers also give donations as and when required by projects. This is often done through our charitable arm, The Bridge The Gap Foundation. Our projects enable vital conservation, research, care and education work to take place directly where it is most needed. Our volunteers contribute, all over the world, to projects that would not exist without them.
