COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION

Musically speaking, Salsa is a group of Latin rhythmic styles that contain the Clave beat; the clave beat is infectious, it makes the listener "have-to-move". Modern Salsa is directly related to the Mambo in both its music and dance forms, especially New York Salsa dance.

During your placement you will have lessons with a private Salsa teacher of Cuban origin who will tailor your programme to your individual level of expertise. The lessons scheduled for your placement are as follows:

  • Ten private Salsa classes per week, each lasting two hours. These will usually be taken in the late morning or afternoon but there will be some flexibility, depending on your teacher’s schedule.

During your placement you will have plenty of opportunities to attend Salsa clubs where you will mix with many different individuals to improve your skills. Here everyone dances together and continually change couples - all lots of fun!

Your dance schedule will allow plenty of time for sightseeing and absorbing the experience of being in Argentina. You can also combine your Salsa placement with a Spanish Course.

If you would like to add more hours to your weekly schedule in order to give you a more intensive Salsa Dance learning experience, we can arrange that for you. There will be an additional charge for the extra hours.

HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION

FOOD:

You’ll be given an allowance for your meals (breakfast and dinner, lunch is excluded for projects in Buenos Aires). This arrangement is to give you the flexibility to sample the great Argentinean food. Right on the door step of the hostel there are many cafes and restaurants with great priced menus just waiting for you….the choice is yours!

HOST FAMILY ACCOMMODATION:

If you would prefer a more cultural experience, we can arrange for you to stay with a local Argentinean family. Host family accommodation gives you the opportunity to become more integrated in the local community and is ideal if you want to practice your Spanish (Basic/intermediate Spanish is required to stay with a Host Family). You'll have a comfortable private room and use of the kitchen. Breakfast and dinner is provided every day and you will usually share a typical Argentinean meal with your family.

Facilities in host families do vary, but you can express your preferences regarding the type of family that you stay with (for example, a family with or without children, pets, etc). If you stay in a host family you will be given contact details of other volunteers living in Buenos Aires so that you won't miss out on any socialising!

LOCATION | SIGHTSEEING:

The romance of Argentina takes one's breath away. From the northern deserts to the southern Andean Cordillera, from Iguazú Falls to the magnificent desolation of Patagonia, Argentina's geography is varied and stunning. Argentina is geared up to thrill - from nights tango-ing in the chic quarter of Buenos Aires to gaucho riding in the grasslands of the Pampas.

Cosmopolitan Buenos Aires:
Buenos Aires is one of the most exciting cities in Latin America. Tango was born here, restaurants serve all manner of world cuisines, bars play the latest music, cafés spill on to the streets and nightclubs allow dancing throughout the night. This fabulous city is renowned for its sophistication and has a surprisingly European feel about it. BA is reminiscent of Paris and its tree-lined avenues and frequent plazas have a beguiling, faded elegance.

Downtown, the Plaza de Mayo is the traditional focus of activity. Nearby Avenida 9 de Julio is popularly known as the world's widest thoroughfare and, with its nine lanes of traffic, is truly a pedestrian's nightmare! Avenida Santa Fe is the most fashionable shopping area.

PRISCILLA BRISSAULT

Salsa Dance Course in Buenos Aires

I was very satisfied, especially when I signed up so late. The staff did a top notch job getting me all relevant information and getting me properly settled and place. I had an enjoyable & worthwhile time. A big thanks to all invovled. Karen, Mechi, Yass, and the staff at BA Stop Hostel

I had a very enjoyable time, in large part due to the people connected to the program. I felt supported 100% in all things I asked for and that really made the difference. I just wanted to go to BA and not have to worry about planning and spend time Salsa dancing. I was grateful to have that experience due to Travellers amazing staff, my teacher, and on-site back-up.

I also made some lasting friendships in the hostel I stayed. The staff, from the front desk, to the manager, the other guests, and the cleaning crew really made my time there special. I met so many amazing people, and got a chance to pay it forward when a hostel mate was unfortunately robbed at a bank, losing her passport, cash, cards, and camera. But even though the material things were lost, the human spirit prevailed and I with some other hostel mates took the woman to dinner on us, the hostel loaned her money for an emergency passport, and eventual she got sorted. It was comforting to know that in a foreign place I could see that I was not alone if something were to happen. Travellers would help me, and complete strangers that I met would step up if I were in a jam. It was a very nice thing to know as I continued my adventure in Buenos Aires.

My teacher, Rita, was wonderfully patient and thoughtful. Her examples and explanations were clear and I feel that my Spanish improved greatly when I was there. We read very interesting short stories and discussed relevant political and social issues. Even though my Spanish was somewhat limited, the content of our discussions was still very engaging. Rita directed our conversations in interesting directions, and I enjoyed not only the Spanish I was learning but also the thoughtful ideas we discussed.

I have no negative comments! I worked hard during the class to focus on the areas I wanted to improve. Though my homework wasn’t always 100% complete (oops!) I got a lot out of the lessons!

The salsa classes were great...especially the group classes because I got a chance to hang out with locals and dance.
The private Spanish classes are amazing... the teachers cater to exactly what you like to do and what you feel you need to work on. I feel like the classes have helped me tremendously, especially with my speaking, which is exactly what I wanted to improve the most.
Both placements were great!

My placement in Buenos Aires was absolutely the best I could have imagined. I chose to attend Salsa, Tango and Spanish classes for two weeks.
Although I arrived by myself I was introduced to other Traveller's volunteers and was put in a room with some of them and we immediately made friends. The ladies running the programs in BA were both the loveliest, most helpful people, they were always there to help us with anything that went wrong or just to go out for nice dinners!

Both my dance teachers picked me up at my hostel for my first salsa and tango lessons to go to the respective studios where my lessons would be held 3 times a week (one of which was a huge mirrored room in one of Buenos Aires' best salsa clubs, to my delight!). The teachers were all fantastic, patient, friendly and helpful about filling me in on everything about BA and I learnt incredible amounts in such a short time.

If I did it again I would do it exactly the same way except for twice as long!! A fantastic experience overall and one I will never forget!
