Optional Add-On: PHOTOGRAPHY AND PHOTOSHOP COURSES

Cape Town is known to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world - definitely an excellent location to learn photography and then go out and snap away to your heart's content!! We have a selection of Digital Photography and Adobe® Photoshop® and Lightroom® Courses for you to choose from, ranging from Beginners to Advanced.

• If you're based in Cape Town, you can do these courses as optional add-ons alongside your main project, OR

• If your main project is in a different location in South Africa, you can do these courses either before or after your main placement. We'll help you make arrangements for accommodation during your stay in Cape Town and you'll probably live in the same accommodation as our Cape Town volunteers.

You'll take the course with Jim Morel (who is Travellers Regional Manager for Cape Town and thus has many years experience of looking after volunteers). He is also a well-known and experienced photographer and photography lecturer (our Jim is multi-talented!). Students of any age can participate - all you need is your digital compact or SLR camera, the desire to learn and a passion for capturing images. Course material is included.

The courses are based in a relaxed setting in a Victorian house in Vredehoek, towered by the majestic Table Mountain ... an idyllic location for nature, landscape, architecture and beauty photography. The views from the mountains down to the ocean and the harbour are absolutely spectacular. You'll also be taken on practical excursions throughout Cape Town and its surroundings - a great opportunity to explore this incredible city whilst learning to take better photos. You'll be given assignments and will need to investigate the city by yourself to photograph landscapes, characters or objects according to the guidelines given.

Courses run throughout the year and are very flexible to suit your schedule. You'll be working 1-to-1 with your tutor, or possibly in a very small group. All lessons are taught in English and all course materials are in English. You'll have lessons 2 or 3 times per week and, depending on the course chosen, they will either be evenings (part-time) or during the day. If you'd like to take the course as an intensive course, i.e. full-time during the day, please speak to us and we can arrange it for you. All courses are tailor-made to fit in with either the placement you are doing, or the time-frame available to you to take part. Our courses are all practical, and most of them include the opportunity to take photographs outdoors.

Lessons don't have set start and finish dates so are very flexible. You can also take a 4 week beginner course back to back if you would like, as the concepts learnt will become more complex. Private lessons are great if you are a complete beginner and want to spend time learning at your own pace. This is also a great option if you want to combine Photography lessons with another programme, such as Teaching or the Work Experience placements. This would be a great add-on for a journalism internship, for example!

1. BEGINNER LEVEL COURSE (Compact and DSLR Cameras):

Most of us have a compact digital camera nowadays, but do you know how to get the fullest enjoyment from yours? Learn how to use all the settings on your camera and maximize this wonderful little tool’s potential. This short course is a must for anyone that wants to get great shots everytime!

2. DIGITAL SLR COURSE
Duration: 12 hours, made up of 4 x 3-hour sessions

Right, so now you have your Digital SLR camera, which means you are serious about taking that awesome photo! However, are the buttons and settings confusing you? This basic to intermediate course teaches you how to shoot on manual settings, and furthermore understanding them! In this course we will cover all aspects from how your camera works to mastering understanding of terms like composition, resolution, exposures, apertures and more.

3. IMAGE EDITING SOFTWARE - ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS INTRO COURSE
Duration: 8 hours, made up of 4 x 2-hour sessions

This Photoshop Intro Course has been specifically designed to take away the initial ‘fear’ factor of the software, allowing a smooth and structured familiarisation and introduction to the world of digital image manipulation.

4. IMAGE EDITING SOFTWARE - ADOBE PHOTOSHOP LIGHTROOM
